How I Got Over My Obsession With L.A. Clothing
When I first moved to L.A., I was ashamed of the fact that I had no idea what went on with fashion. I was clueless. I would go to the mall, walk down the aisles, and just try to enjoy whatever was going on.
I mean, who has time to think about fashion when you're in a mall looking for the best music? I was convinced that I'd be the only one who made bad music.
My dad recently reminded me of this first store I went to and the reaction I had:
I had the same reaction when I saw my second store, which was Smile Electronics. It was weird for me to think that these stores knew what was popular and what was not.
For a few months, I just thought that whoever worked there must just be smart, super-cool people to do this. I was in shock.
They understood what was going on and they knew just how to help people like me out. I thought they were just seriously cool and had that feeling that everyone loves to have.
I'll let you guys in on a secret: It's not true.
It turns out that a lot of music stores are just as dumb as me. But they have a different type of fame.
They get that fame from being associated with a certain artist or type of music and then they run off, forgetting that people want to buy music but can't get it.
Like last summer, for example, I was even talking to this one guy about my issues with a website and he was like "Oh, it's a good thing I ran into you. I just saw your friend on Idol." At this point, I was like, "Oh my God, you saw my friend! You know who I am."
He was clueless.
