Who was Hazrat Zulqarnain?
The name Zulqarnain means the one with two horns or the one of two ages. There are different opinions among scholars and historians about his identity and time period. Some say he was a prophet, while others say he was a righteous king. Some say he lived before Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), while others say he lived after Prophet Musa (Moses). Some say he was Alexander the Great, while others say he was Cyrus the Great.
The most authentic opinion is that he was a righteous king who lived after Prophet Ibrahim and before Prophet Musa. He was not Alexander the Great, who was a pagan and an oppressor. He was not Cyrus the Great either, who was a Zoroastrian and did not build a barrier against Yajooj and Majooj. He was a unique person who was given special blessings by Allah.
What did Hazrat Zulqarnain do?
Hazrat Zulqarnain traveled to different lands and spread justice and goodness among people. He also fought against the oppressors and tyrants who caused mischief on earth. He had a strong army and advanced technology that helped him in his missions.
The Quran mentions three of his journeys: one to the west, one to the east, and one to the north. In each journey, he encountered different people and situations, and he dealt with them according to Allahs guidance.
The Journey to the West
In his first journey, he reached the setting place of the sun, where he found it setting in a muddy spring. There he met a people who had no shelter from the sun. He said to them:
O my people! Either you punish [the oppressors] or else adopt among them [a way of] goodness. [Quran 18:86]
He then continued his journey until he reached another land where he found a people who were given knowledge by Allah. They asked him about Dhu al-Qarnayn:
They said: O Dhu al-Qarnayn! Indeed Gog and Magog are [great] corrupters in the land. So may we assign for you an expenditure that you might make between us and them a barrier? [Quran 18:94]
He replied:
He said: That in which my Lord has established me is better [than what you offer], but assist me with strength; I will make between you and them a dam. [Quran 18:95]
He then built a strong barrier of iron and copper between two mountains that blocked the passage of Yajooj and Majooj. He said:
He said: This is a mercy from my Lord; but when the promise of my Lord comes, He will make it level, and ever is the promise of my Lord true. [Quran 18:98]
The Journey to the East
In his second journey, he reached the rising place of the sun, where he found it rising on a people for whom Allah had not made any shelter from it. He said:
Thus. And We had encompassed [all] that he had in knowledge. [Quran 18:90]
