The Sony WH-1000XM5 also don't have as good a seal as on-ear headphones. Though they do a good job in the low frequencies, they tend to leak some higher frequencies. It sounds like the driver isn't quite optimally sealed, and this reduces the amount of bass that is produced. However, the soundstage is still very big, and there's a lot of air around the music. The soundstage is very wide, and it feels like there's a lot of space in between your ears. The staging is more immersive than the Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless, with a more coherent soundstage. It still sounds like a solid on-ear headphone, as you can still hear where the instruments are located.
The Sony WH-1000XM5 have good audio quality, especially in both high and mid-range. When listening to music, the headphones are noticeably warmer than the Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless. However, due to the lower sensitivity in the higher frequencies, they can't reproduce every detail that the Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless can. The mids are very clean, with clear details like the bass line and vocals, and sound very natural. During my testing, I found the bass frequency to be slightly under-delivered. The mids and highs are well-balanced, and the highs have a crisp sound to them. Overall, they're not quite as crisp as my favorite on-ear headphones, the Bose QC35 II, but they're a step above the Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless. The highs in particular are much more pronounced and cleaner, with less emphasis on high-frequency harmonics. The bass is also more accurate and punchy compared to the Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless. The lows are fuller and more powerful, and they extend more into the deep bass frequencies. The bass is very tight and controlled, and it doesn't get lost in the mix. It's also reasonably wide, so you won't hear any distortion or bleed-through from the higher frequencies.
Since the Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless uses Bluetooth, you'll want to make sure you're not near any metal, as you'll likely hear this sound if you use the headphones. The Sony WH-1000XM5 also have a battery life of around 15 hours. Finally, the Sony WH-1000XM5 have a few small design flaws, including poor sound quality and a too-soft fit. Some users have reported that the included USB cable is a bit too short, and it's easy to accidentally bump the left and right side of the headphones when you're wearing them on the go. For these reasons, we don't recommend the Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless, but as they're more affordable, there's a chance you'll be able to find a good pair.
